When and Where should we meet?
Fall 2007
- Your home
- Park
- Restaurant
- Any place you feel comfortable sharing your unique story
Think about some of your family’s challenges:
Are there public areas in your community that are not accessible?
Curb cuts, public buildings, parking or public parks? Consider taking your guest downtown for a walk to a restaurant or park.
Are simple outings a challenge?
Go grocery shopping, swimming at the YMCA, or on a visit to a friend’s home with your guest.
Are you concerned about personal service and/or respite?
If you are comfortable sharing personal information or demonstrating personal care, you or your respite care provider should demonstrate daily living tasks.
Are you concerned about your child’s education?
Invite a school board member to spend time in your child’s classroom, to ride the bus with them or have lunch with them. Make sure that you get prior approval from the principal and notify your child’s teachers ahead of time.
The main goal of this event is to start to build strong relationships with our elected officials. So during your visit be sure to get to know your elected official also. Does he or she have a family? Personal interests? What legislative committees are they on? Why did they choose to serve the community?
*If this date is unavailable please extend the invitation for another day.
